Purpose : This study aimed to find out the clinical characteristics in children and adolescents, based on the different types of internet usage.
Methods : The subjects of this study were 61 children & adolescents, who had been referred for the treatment of internet addiction by an adolescent media center. The children underwent Korean educational development institute Wechsler intelligence scale (KEDI-WISC), Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and Behavioral Inhibition System/Behavioral Activation System (BIS/BAS). The subjects were divided into two groups: those who played games without using social networking service (the G group), and those who utilized social networking service, with or without playing games the S-G group).
Results : In the G group, the number of males was significantly higher than the number of females (p<0.01). The onset age of internet use was significantly earlier in the G group than in the S-G group (p=0.012). No significant differences were found between the two groups in CBCL and KEDI-WISC. As compared to the S-G group, the G group were significantly higher in their BAS total (p=0.016), BAS fun seeking subscale (p=0.007), and BAS reward responsiveness subscale (p=0.027).
Conclusion : This study suggested that internet addicted children and adolescents might have different behavioral motivational systems based on the different types of Internet use.
